John Brown, a 16-year-old boy, is in the US Navy. On the morning of December 7, 1941, John Brown was listening to the radio. Suddenly, he heard that the Japanese were attacking. At first, he thought that it was a drill but when he went outside, there was a bunch of Japanese planes. He quickly went to the navy airship launcher and went to one of the planes. Suddenly, one of the Japanese planes bombed the place where John was just standing. He was determined the shoot all of them down.
“We have more planes coming in,” said John’s boss. He was one of the best pilots in the Navy. John always looked up to him. When he grew up, he wanted to be just like him. A very big plane zoomed by John. He had already seen the red dot of Japanese planes on it. He turned his plane around and prepared to shoot the plane. When the plane was in the target range, he shot the plane down. The plane exploded when it almost dropped another bomb. Just then, another Japanese plane flew by and this time, it was targeting John. John was very afraid and started to turn and run away but the other plane had already shot. John was scared as the plane plummeted from the air. John slowly opened his eyes. He was crashing from the sky. The plane was turning around and around. Just then, there was a raging fire and the plane crashed on a beach. “Hello?” asked a nurse, “Are you awake?” The nurse dragged John to a temporary hospital near the beach. John finally woke up and asked the nurse who she was. “My name is Mary Webster,” said the nurse, “I found you on the beach near a plane crash. We have trained doctors to help you.” When she said that, a doctor walked into the room. "Hello, my name is Doctor Robert Bell. I am very pleased to help you. I will make sure that all your wounds will be gone." The doctor gave John a drug which made him go back to sleep. The doctor then sewed the wounds on John. When John woke up again, he looked as if nothing had happened. Just as he was waking up, a bomb had been dropped onto the hospital where his friends were working. He instantly jumped up and run towards the hospital. The hospital was collapsing, and people were rushing out of the building. John went into the building to rescue some people. He first went to the floor where the doctors were working. He saw that they had already escaped but some other people weren't that lucky. John helped some of the doctors to get out of the building before everything fell apart. When he helped another doctor out of the building, the building couldn't hold anymore and collapsed. John felt sad for the sick people who couldn't escape the building. He knew that he had to go fight the Japanese navy again but there was a small problem: every single plane was blown up. He decided to shoot from the ground. "Watch out!" shouted another person as a bomb flew above John. John ducked and got a machine gun. He started firing at the sky above him. He had successfully shot down a plane. John was even more determined to shoot down more planes. He had helped a lot in reducing the attack on Pearl Harbor.

One wispy night, Odysseus traveled on his ship for days and days until he finally found an island. The island was very tropical, but this island was not as it looked like. It was mysterious, creepy and usually if people went in there, they never came out. Odysseus needed to escape this island before sundown or the island would swallow him whole. On the island there was a monster named Milligoo who was roaming the island or, should I say, he was the creator of the island. He set a tent, a table, and even had a barbecue set up. Milligoo was stubborn and he had T-Rex hugs. His hugs were very big. You needed to beware of the hugs, because if you stay too long you will get stuck on the monster’s body. Then the monster will wait till you melt and Milligoo will swallow you up. When Odysseus saw Milligoo, he knew what he was in for. Milligoo did not take Odysseus seriously, as he was just really stubborn and wouldn’t let Odysseus go off his gigantic body hugs. Odysseus waited and waited. Eventually Odysseus ran out of patience, so he lassoed the monster. But he accidentally lassoed himself into the sticky bundle. Until he squirmed as quickly as possible, and then ran towards his awaiting ship. Unfortunately, some of the goo was still stuck on his shoe. He ran and ran until he took a break. He took a break for five minutes and the goo got harder and turned into hard rock. Now he couldn’t run anymore. He was stuck. Odysseus didn’t know what to do. He could only stand there and think of a way he could get back to his ship. Until the song “The Blue Danube” was played by the island. This was very drowsy music. He was almost asleep when he remembered he needed to go back to the ship before sundown so he thought of a one and only idea. He got a special gift from Athena who was the Greek goddess of Wisdom. The gift was a lasso sword that has portable gem medicine. He ate a gem medicine from his sword. He remembered the goo was only stuck on his shoes and took off his shoe and on barefoot he ran all the way back to his ship. The good part was he had found some fruits on the island and he ate it so he wouldn't starve and had a full belly. He finished his adventurous trip on the island so he went back to sailing around the world. After a whole week’s sailing, he saw a tropical island. He recognized that island was the Ghost Town Island. One week ago he saw the same island. He did not know what happened to the boat’s course but figured he had sailed back around to the island. He picked up the map to study the Island and saw something he hadn’t caught before, but should’ve -- something that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up in fear. He read: Once a person gets on the island, if the person leaves the island, the island will follow the person. Once a person gets on the island, if the person leaves the island, the island will follow the person. I am proud to be an Asian American. I am going to show you this by the good food, cool plants & trees, and fascinating animals that Asia has. I am proud to be an Asian American because Asia has fascinating animals. For example, the Chinese dragon is a fantasy mythical being and it is relevant to the history of China. Asia also has pandas which are the cutest animals to exist. Asia has great trees and plants. There are a lot of cherry blossoms in Asia in March or April. They are pink in color, which is my favorite color. They also only bloom in spring and they don’t grow cherries. Asia has good food. Chinese breadsticks (油条) are good for breakfast, because they taste good and you can make them small or big depending on how you make the dough. And you can bend them and make them smaller to eat them easily. Japanese sushi is also delicious and healthy because it has a lot of seafood and vegetables. All and all, I think Asia is pretty good because of those reasons. I hope you also agree with me. Therefore I am proud to be an Asian. Alan Ban is a third-grader at Decatur Elementary School. As a Chinese American, I am proud because China has a long cultural history of 5000 years! China has 23 dynasties, including Xia, the first known dynasty in China, and Qin, the first dynasty that united China. Also, there is the Tang dynasty, the greatest dynasty in China. The culture and economy expanded very quickly during the time. It was the golden age of poetry, painting, tricolored glazed pottery, and woodblock printing. The last dynasty is the Qing dynasty.
China has 24 holidays, so it is a lot of time to celebrate. They include Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year, an annual 15-day festival in China and Chinese communities around the world that begins with the new moon, which occurs between January 21 and February 20. Chinese Memorial Day is a traditional Chinese festival and an important day of sacrifice to sweep tombs and commemorate ancestors. On this day, tomb-sweeping is one of the most important and popular activities to show respect to ancestors. Also, China has tons of inventions that changed the world. The most famous ones are the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China. The Compass is an instrument for orientation and navigation, and it appeared for the first time in China between the 2nd century BC and 1st century AD. In the 9th century, Gunpowder was made by Chinese alchemists searching for an elixir of immortality. It is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate. Papermaking is a technique of making paper and has been known in China since the 2nd century BC. In about 105, Cai Lun created a sheet of paper using mulberry and other bast fibers with fishnets, old rags, and hemp waste. Printing is a process for reproducing text and images. In China, printing was improved with the technique of woodblock printing. My ancestral homeland has a lot of places to see, such as the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications that were built across the historical northern borders of ancient Chinese states and Imperial China as protection. Several walls were built from as early as the 7th century BC, with selective stretches later joined together by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. There is also the Terracotta Army. The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang. The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. I am very proud to be an Asian American who contributed to America. The Spring Festival, more commonly known as Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in Chinese tradition. The Spring Festival marks the beginning of a new year in the lunar calendar which ancient China used. Unlike the Gregorian calendar used by most of the world, the lunar calendar is based on the moon, so is often changing, adding and subtracting months as needed. This is why the date of the Spring Festival is inconsistent, though it is always in the range of the end of January and the beginning of February. Though the Spring Festival celebrates the new year, many activities actually take place on the previous night. On the eve of the Spring Festival, almost every single family in China would gather, and eat a feast of union. Different families will have their different traditional foods, ours are dumplings and babao (8-treasure) rice. The most important color of the Spring Festival is red. When the holiday approaches, people will wear red clothes, tape red paper cuttings to the windows, and hang couplets. People would hang the character “Fu” (good fortune) on the door. In the morning of the Spring Festival, kids will get lucky red envelopes under the pillow containing money as a ward against evil. Another important tradition of the Spring Festival is fireworks. My first memory of fireworks is when I was really young, maybe 4 or 5, at my grandparents’ in Yunnan in southwest China. I used the kind in the shape of a stick, if you light the end, it would sizzle, and bright sparks would jump around it. This kind of fireworks is really fun, because you could wave it around in the air and draw shapes with it. Afterwards, the smoke it emits would stay in the same shape for quite a while against the dark night. The bigger fireworks are terribly loud, but once they explode, there is no other sight like it: colorful light exploding in circles. Even though I always cover my ears, my heart still thuds with every explosion. There are arguments that the holiday shouldn’t be called “Chinese New Year” because China isn’t the only country to celebrate it. But in Chinese it is simply called “chun jie”, which translates to “spring festival”. It is the western world that named it Chinese New Year. Regardless of what it is called, the Spring Festival is a time of joy, when families unite, and celebrations are thrown. Sophie Wang is a seventh-grader at Pine Lake Middle School. A long, long time ago, before your grandfathers were born, there were two children. On the Lunar New Year's Eve of 1532, the older child told the younger child that he was getting the gong and waking the family up with a bang.
"I don't think that it is a good idea, but it sounds like a great prank," said the younger child. Later that day, the elder child went into town to buy a gong. He had been saving money since the Lunar New Year of 1531. He went into ten shops until he found a gong with a price of 46 US dollars. He hid the gong, which was arduous because of the gong's size. When the younger child was eating, he almost spilled the beans. The older brother kicked his leg to prevent him from telling the family about the prank. "OWWWWWW!" cried the younger child. "Why did you do that? It hurts!" Soon the children were fighting over nothing. The older child threw an uppercut then the younger child threw a jab. "STOPPPPPPP!" yelled the mom. "WHY ARE YOU FIGHTING?" The mom was raging. The children instantly stopped because they saw their mom that angry. They knew that the mom was super serious. "The next time I see you guys fighting, you will need to clean the whole house." The mother calmed down. Both children knew that cleaning the house would take ages because the residence was big, at least one million square feet. Nobody would want to do that labor. That night, the older child woke up at 2 A.M. to set up the prank. He placed earplugs in his ears and the younger child's ears. After that, he moved the gong in front of the room where his family was sleeping. Suddenly, he realized that he forgot to buy a mallet! None of the stores were open, so he had to make his own. He got a hammer and started making one until he realized that he had the answer in his hand for the whole time. He finalized the plan and prepared to bang the gong. Wham! Smack! Boom! The older child ran as fast as a cheetah to his bed. The next morning, the house was decorated with numerous Lunar New Year ornaments. The older child got red envelopes with 70 US dollars. He was super happy until that evening. That evening while he was eating, he got in trouble. "Yesterday at night, someone rang a gong and woke me up," said the dad. "The person who did it will be in trouble and also get bad luck." The older child started to regret his decision. I'm getting terrible luck, thought the older child. "I did it as a prank," said the older child. "You're in hot water!" exclaimed the dad while the older child ran away. A tiger is an animal with orange stripes and black stripes across the body. No two tigers have the same stripes. The stripes are like the pattern of snowflakes. On the face of a tiger, there are some whiskers coming from the side of the nose and mouth. The whiskers are flying from the mouth going in different directions. The nose is like a triangle with wobbly sides. The eyes are a glowing yellow. The legs of a tiger have stripes on them, and they have claws. Like most cats, the tiger can retract their claws when they aren’t using them and extract them when they’re hunting.
A tiger prowls across its territory like guards guarding a whole room full of gold. The roar of a tiger can be heard 2 miles away! The meaning of the tiger is said to be willpower, courage, and personal strength. My zodiac is tiger. That is why I like tigers and wrote about tigers. Also, my school’s mascot is a tiger! The leaves are falling, the leaves are falling, on the deck and the dirt, the leaves can be seen wherever you are, the leaves glow a bright yellow, the leaves are falling, the leaves are falling The leaves look like they are flying, to faraway places, with fire in its heart the leaves blow up into a flame, the wind blows so fast, that the leaves all change route and goes to the acquaintance’s house. Brendon Wang is a fourth-grader at Medina Elementary School. This is his first time appearing in the Review. Boom! "Whao," says Pa. "What was that?" "Thunder" replies Ma. "Really? We never had thunder here before." "Sure we have, you just never pay attention." Now reader, the loud "boom" you heard was not caused by lightning. It was a house blowing up. Pa and Ma both look at Bob, their only child. "What do you say, Bob? Have we had thunder here before?" they both say at the same time. "Well... We have, but I don't think this is lightning." "Why do you think that?" "Well, a few weeks ago, I bought a newspaper."
"We live on a farm," says Pa. "How did you get it?" "Remember? When we went on that trip to buy a carriage to travel easier, I snuck off for a moment to grab one." "Bob, for that you are grounded for--" But before Pa can finish talking, a loud boom happens again but only closer. Pa and Ma say, "Bob. What is that?" “In the newspaper I read, they said a guy is murdering a bunch of people and the booms are rocks thrown by big catapults." "So what?" asks Ma. "Well... it said the guy is targeting farms and we are the only farm in the city". "Bob! What have you been reading? That is just a rumor." Ma says. "Oh yeah? The news also said that the murderer likes to go to the house to end his victims off." "So that's why you have been getting scary dreams lately?" "Yeah, I guess I have to admit it," says Bob. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. "We barely get visitors, especially at this time," says Pa. "Bob, go look out the window to see who is there," says Ma. "Mom! Dad!" says Bob. “I see a guy in black at the door! I think he has a gun in his hand and has another accomplice hiding in the grass.” "What?" they shout back. "I think the murderer is here!" Bob exclaims. Now you will have to wait for the next book to keep reading. In a small town called Connellsvlie, in my cozy little home, I was sleeping soundly when suddenly someone knocked on my front door. Bang! Bang! I groaned, then pulled on my glasses and checked the time. It was 1:03 a.m. in the morning. Who in their right mind would be knocking at this time? I slipped on my fuzzy white slippers and trudged to the big old red front door. I undid the deadlock and swung the door open. I was hit with a blast of cold air. Shivering, I looked outside. There was nobody on the porch or even on the street. “Hello?” I shouted. No reply. “Anyone there?” I yelled again. Still no reply. The shadows of the houses flickered as the streetlights waved in the wind. The eerie silence of the street made it possible for me to believe that my mind was playing with me. Probably one of those nasty teenagers, ding dong ditching me again. Since I was awake, I decided to get a cup of water. I walked towards the kitchen in the dark, groping the walls. I found the light switch and flipped the kitchen lights on. Brightness illuminated the kitchen. I got a glass cup and filled it with clear cold water. I let the water slowly trickle down my throat when suddenly someone knocked on the door again. Bang! Bang! Bang! This time I rushed towards the door to try to catch the culprit. Again, no one was there.
“Hello?” Still nothing. “Come out, I know you’re there!” No reply. Every single house on the street was pitch blackand the trees swaying in the cold breeze. I was about to close the door when a sudden cold blast of air flew by me into the house. I spun around and saw the most terrifying thing I had seen in my life. The monster of your nightmares, the devil himself. I felt transfixed to the ground. Not wanting to look at it, but couldn't move away. I dove past whatever it was and into my room. I slammed the door and slid into the cramped closet. Crash! Boom! I could hear the steps coming close and closer. I tried to stay as still as I could but my heart was pounding so loud I thought that the monster could hear it. Crack! Crash! The monster opened the door and walked in the room... |
