Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is a Hackathon?
    • It is an event where participants interested in programming work in teams to solve a real-world problem in small groups for a short period of time.
      • You are not allowed to start working on your project before the event starts
    • ​Here are resources for information on hackathons:

  • What are the main parts of a Hackathon?
    • Introduction: introduce the topic and schedule of the event
    • Work Time: teams brainstorm, research, and work on their project 
    • Workshops: participants learn about topics related to creating a product
    • Presentations: participants present their finished products to judges
    • Awards Ceremony: winners are announced
  • What if I do not have a group?
    • ​You can sign up with a group of 2-5 participants, or sign up without a group
    • No solo participants will be allowed
    • If you sign up without a group, you will be grouped with other random participants in your division (6-8th grade, and 9-12th grade)
      • If you sign up with a group that is smaller than 5 people, you can choose to have us add more students to your group
  • How are workshops set up?
    • Workshops are hour-long, live (virtual) presentations that can help you with your project.
    • Workshops help teach:
      • Technical skills: Coding in a certain language, setting up a website, and more!
      • Soft Skills: Communicating your app to others, learning about careers in STEM, and more!
  • What can I use to submit my project?
    • The submission platform is to be announced. 
  • What are the awards?
    • ​1st place: $80 in amazon gift cards for the whole team
    • 2nd place: $60 in amazon gift cards for the whole team
    • ​3rd place: $40 in amazon gift cards for the whole team
  • What do I gain by participating in a hackathon?
    • Participants will develop vital 21st-century skills,  grow as student leaders
    • You will see into the inner workings of the real STEM workplace
    • You will experience the essential process of designing and project-building.
